Overview

The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Al Nas Hospital is a highly specialized unit dedicated to the care of newborns requiring advanced medical and surgical support. Equipped with cutting-edge technology and staffed by expert neonatologists, pediatric intensivists, and neonatal nurses, the NICU provides life-saving care for critically ill infants, including those born with congenital heart disease or requiring surgery shortly after birth.

Scope of the Unit

The NICU has a total capacity of 48 incubators and is supported by a dedicated neonatal operating room, enabling timely surgical interventions without the need to transfer fragile infants. The unit provides comprehensive monitoring, respiratory support, and specialized care for neonates with complex cardiac medical and surgical needs. Services include post-cardiac intervention care via a well-formed NICU multidisciplinary protocol.

Specialized Procedures and Functions:

  • Post-cardiac surgery intensive care for neonates with congenital heart disease

  • Advanced respiratory support (high-frequency ventilation, CPAP, and surfactant therapy)

  • Hemodynamic monitoring and support with inotropes and advanced lines

  • Total parenteral nutrition (TPN) and specialized neonatal feeding support

  • On-site neonatal cardiac surgeries performed in the unit’s dedicated operating room
