Overview

The Adult Intensive Care Unit (AICU) at Al Nas Hospital is a specialized unit designed to provide advanced, round-the-clock care for critically ill adult patients. Equipped with state-of-the-art monitoring and life-support systems, the AICU offers comprehensive management for patients with life-threatening medical and surgical conditions, including those requiring intensive postoperative care after complex cardiac, gastrointestinal, and liver transplant surgeries.


Scope of the Unit

The AICU delivers a full spectrum of intensive care services, from invasive and non-invasive monitoring to advanced ventilatory and hemodynamic support. Special attention is given to managing postoperative  high-risk patients, acute metabolic crises such as diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA), and multi-organ failure. The unit’s mission is to ensure patient safety, optimize recovery, and support comprehensive multidisciplinary care for critically ill adults.

Specialized Procedures and Functions

  • Advanced hemodynamic monitoring and stabilization

  • Post-cardiac surgery care (open-heart procedures, valve replacements, complex adult congenital heart surgeries )

  • Post-liver transplantation care, including graft monitoring and immunosuppression management

  • Post-GIT surgery care, including management of complications and nutritional support

  • Management of diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) and other acute metabolic crises

  • Mechanical ventilation (invasive and non-invasive) for respiratory failure

  • Renal replacement therapy (intermittent hemodialysis and CRRT) for acute kidney injury

  • Sepsis management and multi-organ support

  • Neurological monitoring and postoperative intensive care

  • rapid response team and ICU outreach for very ill patients outside of the ICU
