Biography

Dr. Kareem Abu-Elmagd, born in Mansoura in 1952, is a world-renowned transplant surgeon. He graduated from Mansoura University in 1976, earned his PhD in liver diseases and portal hypertension in 1987 through a joint program with Emory University, and completed a clinical fellowship in transplantation at the University of Pittsburgh in 1989, where he later became Professor of Surgery.

He helped launch the intestinal and multivisceral transplant program at Pittsburgh in 1990, performing more than 450 transplants, and contributed to the first successful intestinal transplantation under tacrolimus. His research led to Medicare coverage for intestinal transplants in the U.S. and introduced new surgical techniques that reduced dependence on TPN and minimized the need for transplantation.

Since 2020, Dr. Abu-Elmagd has been Professor of Surgery at Case Western Reserve University and Director of the Gut Rehabilitation and Transplantation Center at the Cleveland Clinic. He has authored over 400 scientific publications and founded the Kareem Abu-Elmagd Transplant and Gut Foundation in Egypt. In 2019, he performed a pro bono surgery that transformed the life of a young Bangladeshi patient.
