The Liver Transplantation and Hepato-Bilio-Pancreatic (HBP) Surgery Department at Al Nas Hospital is international center of excellence for referral of complex hepatobiliary-pancreatic surgery and liver transplantation for both adult and pediatric patients. With more than 25 years of experience and over 1,500 successful transplants, including 230 pediatric cases, the department delivers end-to-end care for surgical patients and across the entire transplantation journey from pre-transplant evaluation to lifelong follow-up. With a one-year survival rate of 92%, we continue to set new benchmarks in outcomes.

Scope of the Department

The Liver Transplantation and Hepato-Bilio-Pancreatic (HBP) Surgery Department provides comprehensive, multidisciplinary care for patients with advanced liver disease and complex hepatobiliary–pancreatic conditions. The unit coordinates integrated pathways that span diagnostic evaluation, surgical planning, liver transplantation, and long-term medical management, supported by advanced imaging, endoscopic services, and interventional radiology. Through close collaboration between adult and pediatric specialists, transplant surgeons, and critical care teams, the department ensures seamless continuity of care, optimized perioperative outcomes, and structured lifelong surveillance for transplant recipients and patients undergoing complex HBP surgeries.

Pediatric Hepatology & Gastrointestinal Endoscopy: Specialized management of end-stage, metabolic, and congenital liver diseases in children, supported by complete diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopic capabilities for hepatobiliary conditions and ongoing care for pediatric transplant patients.

  5. Medical Oncology: Multidisciplinary, medically directed management of hepatobiliary and pancreatic malignancies, providing coordinated long-term treatment planning encompassing chemotherapy, immunotherapy, and radiotherapy.

  6. Interventional Radiology & Image-Guided Procedures: Advanced diagnostic imaging and minimally invasive, image-guided vascular and non-vascular interventions that integrate with surgical and hepatology services to optimize patient outcomes.

What We Treat

We help children and adults with advanced liver disease through comprehensive evaluation, transplantation, and long-term follow-up care. Conditions include:

  • End-stage liver disease (adult and pediatric).

  • Biliary atresia and congenital pediatric liver diseases.

  • Genetic/metabolic liver disorders (Wilson disease, PFIC, tyrosinemia, glycogen storage disease, α₁-antitrypsin deficiency, Alagille syndrome).

  • Benign and malignant liver lesions.

  • Complex hepatobiliary and pancreatic diseases requiring surgical intervention.

  • Post-transplant complications and lifelong immunosuppression management.

Eminent Procedures & Programs

  • Comprehensive liver transplantation (living donor liver transplantation for Pediatrics and adult).

  • Advanced hepatobiliary-pancreatic surgeries for malignant and benign conditions.

  • Pediatric focused Genetic and metabolic liver disease management.

  • Specialized endoscopy and interventional radiology procedures for Hepatic cases and complex hepatolobiliopanctreatic conditions.
