Program Description:

Our Surgical Gut Dysmotility Program addresses the most challenging cases of digestive motility disorders that have proven refractory to medical management. Our program focuses on three primary conditions:

  • Gastroparesis (characterized by delayed gastric emptying without mechanical obstruction)

  • Colonic inertia (marked by the colon's failure to propel contents effectively),

  • Chronic intestinal pseudo-obstruction (a complex disorder mimicking mechanical obstruction without any anatomical cause).

Patient care is delivered through a comprehensive multidisciplinary team approach that brings together specialized surgeons, gastroenterologists and nutritionists.

Our surgical expertise encompasses a range of advanced procedures carefully selected based on the specific motility disorder and individual patient factors. For patients with severe gastroparesis, we perform pyloroplasty to improve gastric emptying and gastric size reduction surgeries to enhance motility. Those suffering from colonic inertia may benefit from total colectomy when conservative measures have failed. For the most complex cases requiring nutritional support or decompression, we provide specialized feeding tube placements tailored to each patient's unique anatomical and physiological needs. Each surgical intervention is part of a comprehensive treatment strategy developed through our multidisciplinary collaboration, ensuring the best possible outcomes for our patients. Over the past two years, we have successfully performed more than 108 procedures, achieving a success rate ranging from 80% to 95%, consistent with internationally reported standards.

Program Description:

Our Intestinal Rehabilitation Program is a center of excellence for adults and children living with intestinal failure, most commonly caused by Short Bowel Syndrome (SBS). We understand that it is a life-altering condition that requires highly specialized, lifelong care.

Our mission is to help patients achieve nutritional independence and significantly improve their quality of life through a comprehensive, multidisciplinary approach that combines advanced medical management, innovative surgical techniques, and continuous support.

Conditions Treated: Short Bowel Syndrome (SBS), often resulting from massive resections for Crohn's disease, ischemia, or trauma.

Our Approach: We work hand-in-hand with a dedicated Nutrition Support Team. Our surgical expertise includes bowel-lengthening procedures (like the STEP –“Serial Transverse Enteroplasty” procedure which lengthens and narrows the dilated intestine to slow transit time) to increase nutrient absorption. The ultimate goal for our patients is to wean off total parenteral nutrition (TPN) and achieve a nutritional autonomy. Over the past two years, we have successfully performed more than 19 procedures, achieving a success rate ranging from 80% to 95%, in line with internationally reported standards. Owing to the novelty and rarity of these cases, our experience represents a unique and distinguished contribution in this field.

Program Description:

Our Advanced Upper GI and Esophageal Surgery Program provides comprehensive surgical management for benign and malignant conditions affecting the esophagus and stomach. We specialize in treating a wide spectrum of diseases, including esophageal cancer, benign esophageal disorders such as end-stage motility diseases, corrosive injuries and GERD. Our program is particularly renowned for managing challenging cases, including reoperative surgery for failed prior interventions and complex reconstructive procedures.

Patient care is delivered through a dedicated multidisciplinary team (MDT) comprising esophageal surgeons, gastroenterologists, oncologists, radiologists, and nutrition specialists. This collaborative approach ensures that each treatment plan is meticulously tailored to the individual patient’s condition.

We employ state-of-the-art minimally invasive techniques, including laparoscopic surgery, to enhance precision, reduce recovery time, and improve outcomes. Our surgical expertise includes:

  • Minimally invasive esophagectomy with gastric pull-up for esophageal cancer

  • Colon bypass surgery for corrosive strictures refractory to endoscopic management

  • Revision anti-reflux procedures for complex GERD

  • Esophageal replacement surgeries for benign conditions such as end stage achalasia

By combining advanced surgical techniques with a patient-centered, multidisciplinary approach, we strive to achieve the best possible oncological and functional results for every patient. During the past two years, we have completed over 14 specialized procedures with a success rate between 80% and 95%, comparable to leading international benchmarks. Given the exceptional complexity and limited global experience with such rare cases, our work reflects a distinctive and pioneering contribution to this highly specialized field.

Program Description:

Our Comprehensive Gastrointestinal Cancer Surgery Program offers advanced surgical management for malignancies affecting the entire gastrointestinal tract, with specialized expertise in upper GI, colorectal, and pancreatic cancers. We provide personalized, multimodal care for patients with esophageal, gastric, pancreatic, and colorectal malignancies, utilizing the latest surgical techniques and technology to achieve optimal oncological outcomes.

Patient management is centered around our multidisciplinary tumor board, where surgical oncologists, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, gastroenterologists, radiologists, and pathologists collaborate to develop individualized treatment plans. This team-based approach ensures that each patient receives the most appropriate sequence of therapies.

Our surgical expertise encompasses:

  • Minimally invasive and conventional resections for esophageal and gastric cancers, including radical gastrectomies and esophagectomies with gastric pull-up

  • Pancreaticoduodenectomy (Whipple procedure) and distal pancreatectomies for pancreatic cancer

  • Advanced colorectal resections including total mesorectal excision (TME) for rectal cancer and sphincter preserving resections when feasible.

  • Complex multivisceral resections for locally advanced tumors requiring en-bloc removal of involved organs

We integrate enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) protocols to minimize postoperative complications and accelerate recovery, ensuring our patients can promptly transition to adjuvant therapies when indicated.

Program Description:

Our Gut Malrotation and Complex Abdominal Surgery Program builds upon the pioneering work of Professor Aboul Magd, the founder of our department and a leading authority in the surgical management of complex abdominal disorders. We specialize in the treatment of intestinal malrotation across all age groups, from pediatric patients to adults with late-presenting cases, offering both primary corrective surgery and management of complex revisions.

Specialized Surgical Expertise: Kareem's Procedure which is a refined surgical approach developed by Professor Aboul Magd for the definitive correction of intestinal malrotation, focusing on anatomical restoration and prevention of recurrence. The program continues the legacy of Professor Aboul Magd's innovative work ensuring that patients with intestinal malrotation receive world-class surgical care rooted in decades of specialized experience and ongoing innovation.

Over the past two years, we have performed more than 19 highly specialized procedures, achieving success rates between 80% and 95%, consistent with leading international standards. The rarity and complexity of these cases highlight the advanced expertise of our team. Our program holds a distinctive position in this field, particularly due to the presence of Professor Kareem Abu-Elmagd, the pioneer and originator of the procedure that bears his name. His leadership and innovation place our center among the few worldwide with unique experience in performing this technique.
